Curated watches + custom designed & handcrafted straps, by 47Ronin

For the first time since the launch of 47Ronin in 2018, we are curating some interesting & beautiful watches, with which will be matched with our uniquely custom designed and handcrafted straps. 

For the start, we have picked SIXOFOUR LIFE (six-o-four), our long time watch brand partner from Vancouver, Canada who offers well designed and high quality automatic watches with Japanese movement.

Sad to say, the Covid19 pandemic is still going wild in many parts of the world, however, it is not going to stop us in creating beautiful pieces of wearable art, just to give this world a little more colours and positive vibe. 

For the first time, 47Ronin is collaborating with a Singaporean watch modder: Mod Mode Watches. The two artists come together to combine their aesthetic senses, in-depth knowledge of watches & straps, and skilled craftsmanship. 

To Tong Chuek Fung, a watch strap isn't just something that attaches a timepiece to the wrist - it can also be turned into a piece of art. When he was working in Japan as a consultant, Mr Tong became fascinated with crafts such as kimono textiles, pottery and tatami, and was inspired to incorporate kimono fabric into watch straps. 

I have been designing and crafting Japanese-inspired watch straps for luxury brands such as Panerai, Rolex, and Grand Seiko, iconic fashion pieces such as G-Shock, as well as many well-designed and high-quality micro brands across the world. The only smartwatch I have worked on, however, is Apple Watch, so I thought it would be interesting to design for other smartwatches. I have been browsing both traditional watches and smartwatches on Instagram to get design inspiration and meet like-minded people and brands for some interesting collaborations. That was where I came across Mobvoi-TicWatch, one of the most popular  smartwatch brands in the market.

Japan and its culture have drawn people like moth to a flame. It’s incandescently captivating, irresistible, magnetizing. One even embraces and allows it to seep into their lives.

That’s what happened to Tong Cheuk Fung, a Hong-Kong born, Singaporean watch strap artist whose humble beginnings started in Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital.

Living in Japan made Tong love its crafts and culture, giving birth to 47Ronin — Tong’s very own watch strap brand designed and handcrafted by marrying horology, smartwatches, and Japanese art.
